CHAPTER 6

WHAT ABOUT MINDSETS AT SCHOOL?

“I wish that there wasn’t so much pressure to get straight A’s. I would take harder classes if I could risk getting a B.”

—Adam, age 16

Many of us have naturally embraced a growth mindset as simply a part of who we are. Long before the advent of the terms fixed mindset and growth mindset, some parents valued their child’s effort and perseverance more than outcome. The conundrum that some of us face is that the message is not the same in school. Many practices and policies in schools are not growth mindset friendly. Some class policies ascribe to a “sink or swim” philosophy and do not recognize failure as a part of the learning process. In addition to these practices, there may be teachers, counselors, and school administrators who do not subscribe to a growth mindset about success and failure. On the other hand, many schools have begun the journey toward a growth mindset environment. It can sometimes be problematic if the schools must follow district protocols that may be more fixed.

If your children attend schools where the staff and administrators are building a growth mindset environment—awesome! Perhaps you are even reading this book as part of a parent book club for your school. If your children do not attend a school where a growth mindset environment is practiced, you may be wishing they would and looking for ways to bring up the topic with your child’s school.
